GoPro Hero 4 Silver Reviews
The action camera market is a fast growing marketing however within this market the GoPro is the best known and is the ‘must have’ action camera. GoPro have recently realised their fourth generation of cameras with three new models being introduced which are the GoPro Hero, GoPro Hero4 Black and the GoPro Hero 4 Silver.
This post focuses on the GoPro Hero 4 in Silver with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver Review however you can check out reviews on the other fourth generation models here.
The GoPro Hero 4 in silver is a cheaper ‘step down’ model to the GoPro Hero 4 in black, with slightly different design and features. The main difference between the Silver and the Black Hero 4 is that the Silver model has a touch screen, which hasn’t appeared on any other GoPro Camera as of yet. Having this touch screen makes framing and shooting easy without having to rely on the small front screen of the camera. However despite this advantage of the Hero 4 Silver, the Black model does win over when it comes to resolutions, bit rates and frame rates, there will be more on this later on in the review.
The GoPro Hero 4 is the GoPro’s smallest, most compact camera yet and is designed to be shockproof, tough, and waterproof. The main purpose of a GoPro is to record high quality footage of ‘action’ based activities such as extreme sports and travelling.
Although the GoPro is a small ‘pocket sized’ camera it can in fact produce really high quality photos and videos with up to 4K video shooting and various different resolutions, frame rates and other shooting options to choose from.
One of the key things which makes the GoPro stand out from other action cameras is the large number of housing, mounts and accessories available which are compatible with the camera. These include head and helmet mounting options, handlebar mounts, surfboard mounts and underwater housing. All together there are 60+ different accessories to choose from which is exceptionally more than any other camera on the market.
Although the GoPro Hero 4 Silver features a touch screen which makes it much easier to control settings and playback, the GoPro can aslo be connected to a GoPro app which is available on Android and IOS. This app enables you to control the settings of your GoPro and playback your captured videos and photos. The GoPro app makes it easy for you to share your footage with your friends and your footage can easily be uploaded to social media through the app.

GoPro Hero 4 Silver Size and Design
The GoPro Hero 4 silver is the smallest and most compact camera on the market which is only 2.8 x 2.8 x 1.5 inches in dimensions and only weighs 5.1 ounces. In comparison to the Hero 3 the Hero 4 has very similar dimensions therefore if you have housing or mounts from previous GoPro models these will still be compatible with your Hero 4.
The standard case that comes on the Hero 4 Silver is waterproof up to 40 meters of depth however its important that you keep the housings rubber seal clean and dirt free as if a grain of sand or dirt gets in the seal it can cause leaks and potentially damage your GoPro.
The GoPro Hero 3 and Hero 4 models are very similar in size and design however the battery design has changed in the fourth generation therefore if you own any old GoPro batteries from previous models I’m afraid that these won’t be able to be reused in the Hero 4 model. The GoPro Hero 4 has a battery slot behind a small door in the base of the camera rather than having to take of the entire back of the camera like you had to when replacing the batteries on the Hero 3.
Another key difference between the Hero 3 and 4 is that the Hero 4 now has a settings button on the side of the camera which enables you to flick through and change the settings of your camera quickly, this button has replaced the wifi button on the previous models. Having a settings button makes it much easier to change the settings on your camera in comparison to the previous models, making the GoPro Hero 4 even more user friendly than before.
The housing, mounts and accessories compatible with the GoPro Hero 4 silver are exactly the same as all the previous models of GoPros therefore any mounts and housings that you already own can be fitted to the Hero 4.
The majority of other cameras and phones have LCD touch screens however these have been absent from GoPro action cameras up in till now. The GoPro hero 4 silver features a 1.5 inch touch screen on the back of the camera which can be used for chancing setting and previewing what the camera will shoot.
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Video Quality
The Video quality of the GoPro Hero 4 Silver is identical to the Hero 4 in Black with fantastic 4K footage and each frame being 8MP. The GoPro produces sharp and detailed videos. In comparison to the Hero 3 the video quality has improved exceptionally with quality going from 15fps on the Hero 3 to 30 fps on the Hero 4 model.
The GoPro features a variety of different shooting options in terms of frame rate and resolution therefore there are so many different options and modes to experiment with and is a mode for shooting anything you wish to shoot.
The Hero 4 in Silver also offers four different field of view settings which are narrow, medium, ultrawide and superview. The narrow view setting allows you take take footage at just 90 degrees which is great if you are shooting something other than action, the Ultrawide view setting allows you to take footage at 170 degrees therefore you have a wide range of choice when it comes to shooting wide or narrow photos or videos.
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Photo Quality
GoPro cameras are very much geared up for videoing extreme sports and action however as well as this GoPros also have the ablity to take photos. The photo quality on the GoPro Hero 4 silver is just as impressive as the video quality on the camera.
Just like videoing the GoPro Hero 4 shoots photos in 4K quality, which is a high photo quality in comparison with other action cameras. The photos that the cameras produce are detailed, high quality sharp photos with a good contrast of colour.
One of the only downsides to the GoPro Hero 4 is that it doesn’t feature image stabilisation, which is a feature that is starting to appear on some of the other action cameras in the market. However when I tested images and videos on the Hero 4 I found that the images are less wobbly than other cameras (some of which do have image stabilization) therefore I personally I wouldn’t worry to much about the GoPro not featuring image stabilization.
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Smartphone App
Unlike other GoPro cameras in the GoPro range the GoPro Hero 4 silver features a 1.5 inch touch screen which makes it easy for you to control modes and settings. On the previous GoPro models the easiest way to control these settings was by connecting the camera to the GoPro app which is available on IOS and android phones, All GoPros have built in wifi which makes it easy for you to connect the camera up to the app.
Although the GoPro app isn’t as significant for the GoPro Hero 4 silver because you can control all the settings easily using the touch screen, the camera can in fact still be connected up to the app for an alternative way to access and control settings.
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Mounting Options
As I mentioned at the start of the review, one of the key things that makes the GoPro ‘better’ than any other action camera in my opinion is the large variety of different housing, mounts and accessories that you can purchase which are compatible with the GoPro. There are mounts and housings for all different sorts of things as well as many different accessories which enable you to connect the GoPro camera to yourself in various ways and places. These add ons make the GoPro the perfect action camera for all kinds of action and sporting activities.
The GoPro Hero 4 in silver comes with a few mounts including two link extenders that rotate the camera direction by 90 degrees, adhesive bases for flat and curved surfaces, two different clips and the standard waterproof housing which the camera is already cased in, allowing the GoPro to be used underwater by up to 40 metres in depth.
The GoPro Hero 4 includes all of the basic accessories and housing therefore if you are just starting out with the GoPro the included accessories should suffice for your needs. However the extra ‘add ons’ possibilities for the GoPro are endless with over 60 different mounts, housing and accessories which you can purchase for your GoPro.
Some of the mounts and housings available for the GoPro include head and helmet mounting options, surfboard mounts, suction cup mounts, handlebar mounts, underwater housing and chest straps.
If you have just started out with using your GoPro Hero 4 and are looking for a few extra accessories to experiment with then I would high recommend buying the Accessories starter kit for GoPro. This kit is really affordable and includes all the extra accessories which can improve the potential of your GoPro camera.
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Battery Life
In general the battery life of the GoPro Hero 4 Silver isn’t great, however considering how small and powerful the camera is its really not surprising.
The battery life of the Hero 4 Silver advertised is between 1.83 and 2 hours which is slightly longer than the GoPro Hero 4 Black however the exact battery life of the camera does depend on various different things such as the shooting modes you are using and whether you have wifi enabled on the camera.
Although the battery life of the GoPro Hero 4 Silver isn’t great, I found that it is a decent amount of time when shooting most activities or extreme sports therefore you shouldn’t find that it is too much of a problem. Also luckily the batteries in the GoPro Hero 4 are rechargeable and spare batteries are really affordable at approximately $12.99 therefore I would recommend carrying a spare battery so that if your battery dies you can simply take it out and put the spare battery straight in whilst you charge up the dead battery.
