How to Prevent Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful foot condition that is caused by excessive wear to the heel area of the foot which results in an abnormal gait, known as foot pronation. Connective tissues in the arch of the foot are referred to as the plantar fascia and they can develop small tears and become inflamed. The inflammation is what leads to the pain of plantar fasciitis.

People with plantar fasciitis usually feel pain in the heel, which is at its worst with the first few steps taken each day. This is because the body has been at rest all night and acutely feels your weight bearing down on them after several hours of inactivity. As the day progresses, the pain of plantar fasciitis is usually felt when you are engaged in long periods of weight bearing activity or when you go from standing to sitting or vice versa.

There are several conditions which can increase the pain of plantar fasciitis, including obesity, rapid weight gain, having a job that requires you to stand on hard surfaces for a good portion of the day, an inactive lifestyle and wearing shoes that provide no or very little arch support. Fortunately, you have the ability to control most of these factors and can take immediate steps to help lessen the pain in your heels.

When choosing a new pair of shoes, be sure to look for ones with extra cushioning and shock absorption that will help to lessen or eliminate the pain of plantar fasciitis. New Balance is a particular brand of shoe that has created shoes just for the purpose of assisting with this painful foot condition. They are well padded and provide an extra layer of protection between your foot and hard flooring surfaces.

Maintain a Healthy Body Weight and Stay Active

Another way you can help your feet to feel better is by losing weight if your are overweight and maintaining an active lifestyle. Besides ill-fitting shoes, research has shown that obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are the biggest contributors to plantar fasciitis.
